How is Judo played?

On a mat (tatami), each fighter tries to score through throws (nage-waza) or groundwork (ne-waza). An ippon (full point for a perfect throw or a 20-second pin) ends the match immediately.

What are the rules of Judo?

• Ippon = match ends; waza-ari = half point (two make an ippon)
• Forbidden techniques: grabbing below the hip (since 2010), standing leg attacks
• Shido = a warning (for overly passive fighting, illegal grips); 3 shidos = loss
• Golden score: in case of a tie, sudden-death overtime until the next scoring action
• Fighters must avoid passive resistance – active fighting is required

What equipment do you need for Judo?

Judogi: jacket, pants, belt in the corresponding rank color; bare feet on the mat

How long does a game of Judo last?

4 minutes (men & women); if tied: golden score until the next scoring action
