Sport climbing has been an Olympic discipline since Tokyo 2020. Three disciplines: lead climbing, bouldering, speed. The IFSC World Cups are the most important competition series.
Lead: climbers ascend as high as possible on a route (max. 6 min.), clipping the rope as they go. Bouldering: short, difficult routes without a rope, max. 4 attempts. Speed: two climbers race simultaneously up a standardized 15 m route.
Climbing shoes, chalk bag; lead/bouldering: no helmet; belay device for lead climbing (belayer)
Speed: under 5 sec. (world record 4.79 sec.); boulder session: 4–5 min. per route; lead: max. 6 min.
Janja Garnbret (Slovenia) is regarded as the greatest climber of all time – in 2021 she won all four World Cup disciplines in a single season.
