Artistic gymnastics is an Olympic individual sport with all-around, team and apparatus events. Men compete on six apparatus, women on four.
In the all-around every gymnast performs on each apparatus of their programme and the sum of the scores decides. An apparatus final comes down to a single routine.
Standardised apparatus, plus a leotard or a singlet and shorts. Chalk is common for grip, as are wrist supports, hand guards and tape.
A women's floor routine runs up to 90 seconds; a vault is over in a few seconds.
Historic scores are only partly comparable: in 2006 the FIG replaced the perfect 10.0 with an open-ended system that separates the D and E scores.
