Athletics is the original form of sport: running, jumping, throwing. The Diamond League is the most important international competition series, with the World Championships as the highlight.
Athletics covers over 40 disciplines: sprints (100 m–400 m), middle/long-distance running, hurdles, relays, high jump, long jump, triple jump, pole vault, shot put, discus, javelin, hammer throw, combined events (decathlon/heptathlon).
Running shoes (spikes for track), athletic kit; specialized equipment per discipline (pole, shot, javelin…)
Track races: 9.58 sec. (100 m world record) up to several hours (marathon); field events: an entire competition day
Usain Bolt holds both sprint world records: 9.58 sec. (100 m) and 19.19 sec. (200 m) – both set in 2009.
