How is MMA played?

Two fighters compete in the octagon (an 8-sided cage). Rounds last 5 minutes each, title fights go 5 rounds, regular fights 3 rounds. Victory by KO, TKO, submission, or the three judges' scorecards.

What are the rules of MMA?

• Forbidden: groin strikes, eye gouging, biting, fish hooking, headbutts
• Forbidden strikes against a grounded opponent (certain target areas)
• Fighters can submit immediately via tap-out
• A doctor stoppage (TKO) is called if a fighter can no longer defend themselves or is injured
• Weight classes: from strawweight (up to 52 kg) to heavyweight (up to 120 kg)

What equipment do you need for MMA?

MMA gloves (approx. 4 oz), mouthguard, groin guard, shorts; no shirt
