Wrestling is a mat combat sport in which throws, controlling positions and putting the opponent in danger all score points.
A bout runs over two periods of three minutes. A fall ends it at once; without a fall technical points decide. The tournament is a knockout with a repechage.
A regulation singlet and wrestling shoes; ear guards and bandages are permitted under UWW rules.

Greco-Roman wrestling was already on the programme of the first modern Olympics in 1896; freestyle followed in 1904 and women’s freestyle in 2004.
