Competitive surfing scores individual rides for difficulty, innovation, manoeuvres, speed, power and flow. Athletes face each other in heats and choose for themselves which waves to ride.

How is Surfing played?

In a heat the two highest single-wave scores are added together. The higher combined score wins the heat; events and season points build the tour rankings.

What are the rules of Surfing?

• Only rides recognised by the judging panel are scored.
• As a rule, a surfer’s two best waves count in each heat.
• Interference can cost points if a surfer takes another’s wave of right of way.
• Priority governs who has the right to a contested wave.
• The tour ranking is built from points scored at CT events.

What equipment do you need for Surfing?

Surfboard with leash · wetsuit or rashguard depending on conditions · wax and fins

How long does a game of Surfing last?

A heat usually runs 25–40 minutes, depending on the round and the conditions.

What is special about Surfing?

The 2026 WSL Championship Tour starts with 36 men and 24 women; during a contest the rankings are updated live after every heat.
